Rooty’s

A spicy fresh ginger-lime shot developed

From initial idea to a distinct shot concept with fresh ginger, lime, and chili

For Rooty's, Brouwhoeve developed, together with Brouwhoeve Distilleerderij, a special liqueur shot with a clear kick: Electric Mule.

The project started a few months ago when Victor from Rooty's got in touch with the idea to develop a new shot. Not a standard sweet shooter, but a fresh, tangy, and energetic drink with its own character. Victor came up with the idea of working with fresh ginger. From that starting point, a flavor direction emerged that is recognizable to a broad audience, but at the same time distinct enough to stand out in hospitality, events, and festivals.

After various tasting rounds, recipe adjustments, and tasting sessions, a powerful liqueur shot named Electric Mule was ultimately developed. A shot inspired by the fresh, herbal experience of a Moscow Mule, but concentrated in a compact, energetic serving format. The result is a private label shot with fresh ginger, lime, chili, and kaffir lime leaf. Tangy, fresh, aromatic, and made for a target audience looking for something new in the glass.

For Rooty’s developed NewSpirits together with Brouwhoeve Distillery a special liqueur shot with a clear kick: Electric Mule.

The project started a few months ago when Victor from Rooty’s got in touch with the idea of developing a new shot. Not a standard sweet shooter, but a fresh, spicy and energetic drink with its own character. Victor came up with the idea of working with fresh ginger. From that starting point, a flavor direction emerged that is recognizable to a broad audience, yet distinctive enough to stand out in hospitality, events, and festivals.

The assignment: a shot with recognition, energy, and a distinct kick

Rooty’s wanted to develop a shot that is immediately understood by the target audience, but does not feel like a copy of existing products.

The direction was clear: a powerful, fresh, and spicy shot with natural ingredients and a distinct flavor profile. Fresh ginger was to be the base. Around it, a recipe had to be built that brings balance between sharpness, freshness, acidity, warmth, and drinkability.

The request to Brouwhoeve and Brouwhoeve was clear:

Develop a distinctive ginger-lime shot with a stimulating chili heat, suitable for hospitality, festivals, student parties, and events for an 18+ audience.

Thus, Electric Mule became no ordinary liqueur. It became a concept drink with a clear name, a recognizable flavor anchor, and a strong experience.

The role of Brouwhoeve: from flavor idea to marketable drink concept

Brouwhoeve  was involved in the creative and commercial translation of the idea. In a shot concept, it’s not just about flavor. The product must be easily explainable, visually stand out, and align well with the experience of bars, hospitality, festivals, and events. Within this project, Brouwhoeve was involved in:

+ The concept development of Electric Mule
+ The translation of the idea into a clear positioning;
+ Refining the flavor direction;
Thinking along about target audience and serving moment;
+ The connection between name, flavor and experience
The alignment between recipe, appearance, and marketability.
+ Developing a story that is suitable for hospitality and brand activation;

The role of Rooty’s: a shot with energy and impact

Rooty's is a brand that revolves around experience, friendship, going out, and impact. The brand connects drinking a shot with a larger story: good nights out should leave something behind that goes beyond the moment itself. For Electric Mule, Victor from Rooty's brought in the initial flavor direction: fresh ginger as a base. That turned out to be a strong ingredient for a shot because ginger is immediately recognizable, has natural power, and gives a warm, stimulating mouthfeel. Rooty's was looking for a product that fits hospitality and events, but also a young, adventurous 18+ target audience. A shot that you don't just drink, but experience.

Electric Mule aligns well with that:

Recognizable due to the link with the Moscow Mule;
Surprising due to the combination of ginger, lime, and chili;
 Energetic due to the stimulating mouthfeel;
Fresh enough to keep drinking;
 Powerful enough to linger as a shot moment.

Rooty’s is a brand that revolves around experience, friendship, going out, and impact. The brand connects drinking a shot with a bigger story: good evenings should leave something that goes beyond the moment itself. For Electric Mule brought Victor from Rooty’s the first flavor direction in: fresh ginger as base.  This turned out to be a strong ingredient for a shot, because ginger is immediately recognizable, naturally powerful, and provides a warm, tingling mouthfeel. Rooty’s sought a product that fits with hospitality and events, but also with a young, adventurous 18+ target group. A shot that you do not just drink, but experience.

Making of

Electric Mule from trial version to final product

The role of Brouwhoeve Distillery:

Recipe development and production

Therefore, multiple trial versions were developed. During the tasting sessions, attention was paid to:

The intensity of the fresh ginger;
+ The balance between sour and sweet;
The freshness of lime;
+ The warmth of chili;
+ The aromatic effect of lime peel;
+ The fresh accent of kaffir lime leaf;
+ The mouthfeel;
+ The aftertaste;
+ The drinkability as a chilled shot

Only when flavor, aroma, and aftertaste were well balanced, was the recipe assessed as the final version.

For the substantive development and production, the idea was translated into workable liqueur recipes. A shot with fresh ginger sounds simple, but in practice requires precise balance.
Ginger can quickly become too sharp. Lime can turn out too sour. Chili must provide warmth, but must not become burning or aggressive.  Sugar is needed for roundness and texture, but must not make the product heavy or sticky.
